Peso

Designer : Julie Richoz

Marble is, by definition, a heavy material. At times, heaviness becomes useful in domestic environments, objects that can hold things in place are often unexpectedly valuable. With Peso, Julie Richoz developed the idea of a universal domestic weight: a solid object designed to prevent doors from slamming, newspapers from blowing away, or books from falling. The piece takes the form of a carved block. Through numerically controlled machining, a handle is revealed within the mass, creating a balance between functionality and form. The object engages with the fundamental language of sculpture, drawing from the tradition of stone carving and exploring the relationship between solid and void.

Its appeal lies in its ergonomics. Despite its weight, the handle offers a comfortable and intuitive grip. Peso is an object one might not initially feel the need for, yet one that proves difficult to live without once it becomes part of the home.
