Stoel
Designer : Stefan ScholtenStefan Scholten designed a chair for Matera that reflects the essence of his current practice. Known not only as a designer but also as a master colourist, Scholten has built an international reputation through his refined use of colour, material, and composition across textiles, lighting, paint, carpets, and furniture. At this stage in his career, the chair represents a distilled expression of his work. Designing a chair is one of the most challenging tasks for a designer:
it must combine structural strength, comfort, function, authenticity, and expressiveness while maintaining a clear and balanced form.
For Scholten, the chair becomes a fundamental design object in which proportion, material, and colour meet. Within the context of Matera, the chair gains a new meaning through the use of marble. A material traditionally associated with architecture and sculpture transforms the familiar object into something more contemplative. Rather than focusing purely on function, the marble chair emphasizes the beauty of shape and the quiet spatial presence a chair holds in space. Its contours both occupy space and give something back, shaping the emptiness around it. In that sense, the chair reveals the space around it.
For Matera, the piece sits between design and sculpture. It reflects Scholten’s precise sensibility as a designer and colourist, while engaging with the project’s broader ambition: exploring how contemporary design ideas can be reinterpreted through the timeless material of stone.
